I being a concerned citizen concerned about the Nation Debt, our nations dependance on foreign oil, the bail out of the auto companies and the banks, robbing of 500 billion from our Medicare, the overreaching regulations by the EPA, the spread of Radical Islam, and securing our borders, recently wrote a letter to Senator Udall. I hand delivered a copy to Pamela Shaddock in the Greeley, Colorado office on June 6,2011. I also made a recording of our conversation defining what I expected in an answer to my letter. Download the audio recording HERE. (3.4MB)

What I received as a response from his office did not address the issuses that I stated that I wanted a SPECIFIC RESPONSE to. What is he doing to earn his $174,000 a year salary? I wrote a similar letter 2 years ago and got a similar response. When are we going to see action instead of empty words? Mark you have had 2 years when are you going to do something to improve America's situation. We have had nothing but empty promises from congress for over 40 years? Department of Energy is totally useless!!! Mark, where are the answers I requested, I don't see them in your letter?

Below is the response I received from his office 2 weeks later followed by my much longer letter.

Senator Udall Letterhead
June 21, 2011
Dear Jerry,

Thank you for contacting me about important debates in Congress on energy reform.  I appreciate that you took the time to express your specific concerns.
One of my top priorities in the U.S. Congress has been to reform our nation's outdated energy policies.  As a member of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources (ENR) Committee and, more importantly, as a Westerner, I am very concerned about our energy future.  Our dependence on foreign sources of energy jeopardizes national security and limits economic development at home.  A smart, ambitious energy plan that takes advantage of all of our domestic energy options will create jobs for Americans, improve security, help the environment, and place America at the forefront of the next great, global revolution - the clean energy revolution.
That is why I support a comprehensive energy plan, including responsible onshore and offshore drilling for oil and natural gas, fast-tracking renewable energy sources and energy efficiency technology, and safely expanding nuclear power.  Natural gas, in particular, will be an important fuel to help us transition from the carbon-intensive fuel sources of the past century to the clean energy economy of the 21st century.  We should also continue oil shale and clean coal research, although most experts agree these technologies are still far from being commercially viable.
Recent technological advances, such as hydraulic fracturing, have increased domestic crude oil production in 2009 and 2010, the first increases in domestic production since 1991 according to the U.S. Energy Information Agency (  Development of oil and gas plays such as those in North Dakota and Montana (Bakken), Pennsylvania and New York (Marcellus), and Colorado (Niobrara) have helped increase U.S.. energy independence and I look forward to working with my colleagues on the ENR Committee to develop our domestic resources safely.
In addition, I believe any energy legislation that comes to the Senate floor should include a federal renewable electricity standard (RES).  Colorado is a leader in clean energy, thanks in part to our state RES.  I co-led the bipartisan effort to pass the state-based RES that was recently amended to require 30 percent of Colorado's electricity to be produced by renewable energy resources by 2020.  I believe the federal government similarly must adopt a renewable energy standard, and that is why in April 2011, I introduced ambitious legislation to set a 25 percent renewable electricity standard by 2025 (S.741).
There is no silver bullet that will solve all of our energy problems; it is going to require silver buckshot.  As the Senate continues to debate energy reform, you can be sure that I will keep your concerns in mind and I will always keep the best interest of Coloradans as my highest priority.
I will continue to listen closely to what you and other Coloradans have to say about matters before Congress, the concerns of our communities, and the issues facing Colorado and the nation.  My job is not about merely supporting or opposing legislation; it is also about bridging the divide that has paralyzed our nation's politics.  For more information about my positions and to learn how my office can assist you, please visit my website at

Warm regards,
Mark Udall
U.S. Senator, Colorado

Below is the text of my original letter to Senator Udall.

Dear Senator Mark Udall,
National Debt
I emphatically urge you to vote NO on any vote increasing the national debt ceiling.  Our Government including both parties has spent recklessly for decades.  Time for the Government to tighten its own belt & stop spending money we don’t have.  The 787 Billion dollar stimulus bill created 500,000 new government jobs at the tax payers’ expense.  Time for the Government to do what private business does when they cannot support the people they have working for them…Lay them OFF.  This can and does happen in the Government… it’s called Reduction in Force or RIF.  I worked as a contractor at the Naval Research Lab for 17 years, it happened while I worked there.  The Lab’s machine shop essentially had too many chiefs & not enough Indians and priced themselves out of existence.  Private industry could do the work cheaper & more efficiently.  We private citizens and taxpayers can no longer afford to pay for big government that does not contribute to growing the economy.  It is Time to get serious and really actively listen to “WE THE PEOPLE”, start cutting back government agencies NOW.  A good place to start is the Department of Energy.  The Department of Energy was instituted on 8-04-1977 to LESSEN OUR DEPENDENCE ON FOREIGN OIL.  Now it’s 2011, 34 years later and the budget for this so called necessary department is 24.2 Billion a year, has 16,000 Federal Employees & 100,000 contract employees.   Look at the job it has done; It has not created one BTU, kilowatt, or single drop of oil.  The only energy produced by the Department of Energy is the rapid flow of taxpayer dollars!
Here is another program to cut that we taxpayers cannot continue to afford.  SafeLink Wireless is a government supported program that provides a free cell phone and airtime each month for income-eligible customers.  In other words, my tax dollars are being distributed to a wireless phone provider to provide welfare recipients with free cell phones and airtime.  I don't know about you, but as for me, enough is enough.  Stop wasting my money!  I pay for my own cell phone and my minutes, why should I pay for someone else’s that I don’t even know?

Social Security & Medicare
With the passage of the wasteful 787 Billion Dollar stimulus bill, every Social Security recipient including myself received a check for $250, and then froze the COLA for two years.  During the same time period members of congress voted to give themselves $10,000 in pay raises.  How can this in any way be considered fair and equitable?  COLA for seniors on Social security need to take in to account energy prices & fees levied against them by state & local governments. Senior citizens whose only source of income is Social Security are generally at a level considered to be poverty and should be given access to food stamps. Who benefited the most? Since this time the price of gasoline and the price of food has risen dramatically due to failed government policies concerning drilling our own oil at home and the ethanol subsidies. Obama care robs 500 billion dollars from Medicare that I have paid into my entire working life. This is outright FRAUD by the US Government.  Please provide me with a detailed explanation of how cutting 500 Billion dollars from my Medicare is going to provide me with the same level of benefits that I have paid into my entire working life.

The current sorry state of the US economy was directly caused by members of congress from both parties and their failed policies.  If congress wants to fix the economy and create jobs they need to get BIG GOVERNMENT OUT OF THE WAY.  The problem with the fall of the housing market can be traced back to the Clinton administration by creating a way for people to buy houses for people who simply cannot afford to pay for them.  When the bubble burst, it put out of business or created extreme hardships for construction material providers and trickled down to plumbers, electricians and air conditioning workers & their suppliers.  My own brother was out of work for two years because of that. He used to work in a warehouse for Carrier Air Conditioners and was laid off because of lack of sales.
People who could not afford to pay for their houses defaulted on their loans causing the banking crisis.  Then the banks were bailed out at taxpayer expense.  Now the banks won’t loan us money or re-negotiate housing loans.  This has affected me personally right in my own neighborhood.  I moved to Evans, Colorado from Northern Virginia 6 ½ years ago.  I purchased a brand new house for $215,000 in December of 2004, and finished off my basement at a cost of $33,000.  Now because of 8 foreclosures in my neighborhood I have watched the value of my house fall to $150,000.  This amounts to a loss of $98,000 in value in 6 ½ years because of stupid ill thought out legislation by members of congress.  Even as I write this my next door neighbor has declared bankruptcy and is letting his house go back to the bank.  The bank will simply dump his house at a low price to get if off their books further depressing the value of my house even more.  Barney Frank and Chris Dodd ought to be held financially responsible to all the people who have been hurt by their legislation as well as serving a long jail sentence for their irresponsible actions.  My retirement nest egg and that of millions of others has essentially been stolen by the US Congress.  This is why I have become politically active in holding my elected officials accountable for their actions.  If you had nearly $100,000 taken away from you, wouldn’t you be mad as hell like I am?

Bail Out of Auto Companies
I called your DC office several times before you voted yes to bail out the Auto companies.  I urged you to vote NO yet you voted yes.  Please explain why you did not listen to me as one of your constituents. I explained that I had purchased three cars from GM that were absolute lemons and caused me no end of both mental and financial grief.  I had similar experiences with three Chrysler products.  That is why my last two cars have been Toyotas and have none of the severe problems that I had with GM & Chrysler products.  Ford did not take the bailout money and has done very well in the marketplace.  Case in point, the Chevy Volt, a car that costs $42,000 that only goes 40 miles on one charge of the battery.  I couldn’t even make it from my house to Denver before the battery ran down.  Never mind the fact that there is no possible way I could afford to buy one while living on Social Security.  My check for a whole year is less than half the price of the car.  The real problem with the auto companies is their labor unions which have done nothing but increase the real sticker prices of cars upward way out of proportion to what they are actually worth.

It is time to cut back on the role of the EPA.  The EPA regulations have made it very difficult for business to compete with foreign countries in the world market place.  The numerous environmental regulations have chased many US companies overseas along with the jobs that would have been done here in the US.  Congressman Cory Gardner has grilled officials from the EPA about whether they consider their regulations effect on jobs.  They have admitted that they do not consider the regulations effect on jobs.  EPA rules have forced Shell oil to abandon Oil Drilling plans in the Arctic.  Shell had spent 4 Billion dollars & five years exploring and found an estimated 27 billion barrels of oil.
The EPA has abolished insecticides that were proven effective in killing numerous bugs which our nation now has numbers in epidemic proportions. Examples are the Bed Bugs, the Stink Bugs, and West Nile Virus.  I have a personal friend of mine in Northern Virginia who was driven out of her own home by gnats that three professional exterminator companies couldn’t kill.  She had to rent an apartment for 9 months with her home sealed off and all utilities shut off in order to try and kill the bugs.
Don’t get me wrong, I am not totally against the EPA.  Their original purpose was to prevent companies from dumping toxic chemicals into the water ways of America. They have gone way overboard in regulating air quality as lots of air pollution actually comes from China and from trees and agriculture sources.  As President Ronald Regan once said: “Approximately 80% of our air pollution stems from hydrocarbons released by vegetation, so let's not go overboard in setting and enforcing tough emission standards from man-made sources.”
Being a photographer for nearly fifty years, I truly appreciate the beauty of nature and our National parks and wilderness areas in the USA and other places in the world. See example of my photography here:

Fort Collins Mosque
There is a Moslim Mosque located at 900 Peterson St. in Fort Collins that wants to expand its school facilities or Madrassas (Islamic schools) proliferating in the United States, schools that frequently teach hatred of Christians, Jews, Americans, and non-Muslims.
Followers of radical Islam have declared jihad against Christians, Jews, non-Muslims and secularists - simply because they regard us as infidels.  They even target Muslims whom they regard as insufficiently “pure.”
Tens of thousands of Islamic militants now reside in America, operating in sleeper cells, attending our colleges and universities, engaging in influence operations aimed at the media and government. They are here - today. Many have been here for years. Waiting. Preparing.
I urge you to introduce legislation preventing the implementing of Shira law by the Islamists and to ban further immigration of Islamic refugees into this country. Their mission is to change America into a caliphate and change our way of life completely.  We cannot allow that to happen.

Oil & Gas
Gasoline price for regular unleaded gas was $1.29 a gallon on January 4, 2009.  Since the time that you and President Obama both were elected to office, gas prices have nearly tripled. On January 8, 2009, I sent you an email specifically asking you when you were going to introduce legislation to reduce our country’s dependence on foreign oil. I asked you to provide me an answer to that question in writing.  I finally got an answer from you dated November 23, 2009 nearly 11 months later which never answered my original question.  Instead you give me political double speak saying you support different things related to energy. So I am going to ask you the same question again: I would like to know when will you, as my Senator will introduce legislation that will start immediately to solve this country’s dependency on foreign oil?  Please tell me when and on what date, I would like an answer in writing.  If you already have, then please provide me with a detailed list of legislation that you either have sponsored or co-sponsored that have helped eliminate our dependence on foreign oil.
In your kids to parks event in Evans, I asked you about why we only have one oil refinery in Colorado while Wyoming has five. You answered we are producing more oil now in the US than ever before.  If this is the case why are our gas prices so damn high?  Interior Secretary Ken Salazar is formulating new laws which will further restrict oil and gas development in the United States.  Why is it that our own government does not seem to have any common sense?  Just during his first month in office he cancelled 77 oil & gas leases.  So please tell me how in any way shape or form that reduces our dependence on foreign oil?
Even though President Obama is against offshore drilling for our country, he signed an executive order to loan $2 Billion of our taxpayer dollars (which we can't afford to loan since we're broke) to a Brazilian Oil Exploration Company (the 8th largest company in the entire world -- Petrobus) to drill for oil off the coast of Brazil!
In 2007 when crude oil hit $147 a barrel and gas prices hit $4.00 it nearly killed off my photography business.  Now we are nearly their again. I have had to close my photography business.  Along with the housing crisis caused by congress and the high gas prices again, I simply cannot make a decent living.  By the time I paid liability insurance and then personal property taxes to Weld County, there is nothing left, in fact it actually cost us money we didn’t have to try and stay in business.

Illegal Immigration & Drug Cartels at the US Borders
Congress for decades has refused to secure our borders.  Now we have millions of illegal aliens living in the US taking jobs from American citizens.  They are taxing our medical system causing the legal citizens insurance rates to skyrocket, they don’t just go to a doctor, and they use the hospital emergency rooms as their primary care physicians.  They get free care at the expense of the legal citizenry.  They cost millions of dollars to our local economy when they commit crimes and are put in our jails. In the Weld county jail the cost is $55 a day to the local taxpayers.
Drug wars at the borders are rampant with the drug kingpins killing anyone who gets in the way.  Why is it that our own government and the Obama Administration are suing Arizona for enforcing the same federal laws that they refuse to enforce?  The problem is so bad that we should send the Navy Seal Team 6 & the Marines down to Mexico to take them out.  How many more of our citizens have to die before the U.S. Government acts and owns up to their responsibility?
Locally right here in Greeley, Colorado, Weld County Sheriff John Cooke on October 16, 2008 found 1338 illegal aliens who had committed identity theft using someone else’s Social Security number.
Back during the great depression, Herbert Hoover ordered the deportation of ALL illegal aliens in order to make jobs available to American citizens that desperately needed work.  Harry Truman deported over two million illegal aliens after WWII to create jobs for returning veterans.
In 1954 Dwight Eisenhower deported 13 million Mexicans.  The program was called Operation Wetback.  It was done so WWII and Korean veterans would have a better chance at jobs. It took two years, but they deported them!
Now if they could deport the illegal aliens back then, government could sure do it today.  If you have doubts about the veracity of this information, enter Operation Wetback into your favorite search engine and confirm it for yourself.
Why you might ask can't they do this today?  Actually the answer is quite simple.  Hoover, Truman, and Eisenhower were men of honor, not untrustworthy politicians looking for votes!

A very concerned Citizen
